If you’re looking to visit one of the waterside parks in Avondale, your first picnic plan should be at Friendship Park. This community spot off McDowel Road features three playgrounds, a community fishing pond, a Japanese garden, walking trails, and sports fields and courts. There’s even a splash pad and dog park. You’ll find plenty of places to spread out your blanket and enjoy a meal alfresco.
Festival Fields Park is located further south on the Aqua Fria River, off of West Lower Buckeye Road. You’ll find sports fields and a fishing pond here as well, but what makes Festival Fields unique is the pump track and skate park connected to the community space. The park was recently renovated so the facilities are in great condition and the waterside views make for an ideal day trip.
Dessie Lorenz Park is perfect for a nice walk with people-watching opportunities along Avondale’s Main Street. When you’re ready for a snack, sit down on one of the community benches or lie out on the grassy fields.
Las Ligas Park is a neighborhood park on West Lower Buckeye Road, across the river from Festival Fields Park. The park features shaded areas and lighted walking paths so it’s ideal for an outdoor meal and a sunset walk. During the hotter months stopping by this park at cooler hours or making use of the shaded areas can help you beat the heat while enjoying the outdoors.
