Beat the Heat: Summer RV Cooling Tips You Need
Summer brings extreme heat to Arizona, which can make it difficult to maintain a comfortable
temperature in your RV. While you might not spend a lot of time at your RV because you’re off
having fun, you’ll want a cool place to come home to. Plus, you want to make sure your pets or
food are not at risk. Here are a few tips to keep your RV cool this season.
- Utilize the Evening Cross Breeze
The key to a chilled RV starts at night. Open up your windows after sunset to allow fresh air to
flood the small space. If you have an AC unit, you can give it a break during the evening if the
air is cool enough. This ensures that when things start to heat up, it will take longer for your RV
to get stuffy.
- Lockdown in the Morning
As soon as morning comes, it’s time to close down the RV to keep as much cool air inside as
possible. Don’t just close the windows, also pull the blinds to block the sun. You’ll want to invest
in insulated window covers for best results. Make sure you limit ins and outs throughout the day
so the cold air can’t escape.
- Create Shade
Depending on where you parked, you might need to create a shaded area that provides an
extra barrier to block the sun’s rays. Most RV’s have an awning, but if yours isn’t cutting it, you
can buy a portable shade tent. Even if you are parked in a shadier spot, you can sometimes
extend the shaded area and maximize your summer hangout spots.
- Try a Portable Evaporative Cooler
If you need some extra help, try a portable evaporative cooler. These small units have a water
tank and operate like a small swamp cooler. This one from Ace Hardware is small enough to move around in an RV and is perfect for chilling up to 250 square feet. You can use the fan function at night to keep air circulating.
The most important factor in surviving the Arizona heat in an RV is maintaining a temperature.
Once you have it cooled, do everything you can to keep it. You can easily lose your cool during
the heat of the day if you aren’t proactive.
